PARKERSBURG — Patrons have seen an increase in the number of specialized fitness classes at the YMCA of Parkersburg thanks to personal trainer Michaela Piendel.
Piendel on June 28 launched Fit30, a new 30-minute Functional Interval Training class. It’s designed to adapt to all fitness levels with a small class size ratio of 1:10. The class is ideal for anyone interested in weight loss, increased endurance, strength training, or improving overall mobility, athleticism and health.
Fit30 participants only have good things to say about the class. Following each session, they share their class experiences on social media.
Amy Paff, a Fit30 participant, said the class was exactly what she needed.
“This class will take you from where you are and push you to your next level,” Paff said. “The small class size is great for accountability and encouragement, and Michaela is so knowledgeable and incredibly fun to work with.”
Kathy Moore Lund, another Fit30 participant, lost 5 pounds and 5 inches overall since starting the class three weeks ago.
“Anyone would benefit from Fit30, no matter their fitness level,” she said.
The program is designed as four-week sessions held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings with two class options. For the program’s entirety, the 6 a.m. class is reserved for those interested in a guaranteed spot in the class. Drop-in participants are welcome at 6:30 a.m.
Fees are at www.parkersburgymca.org/fit30-fitness-class. A four-week session began Monday and will end Aug. 20. Due to the popularity of the class, only drop-ins are available for the upcoming session.
Piendel also teaches Women’s Strength Training in which she empowers women to become more confident in the weight room.
Meredith Buckley Kile, a class participant, said it was “nice to see the amount of women outnumbering the men in the free weight area during the class.”

Piendel, a certified Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor, became the YMCA of Parkersburg’s personal trainer in September. However, her fitness journey began in the early days of pursuing her bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology at West Virginia University.
During her time at WVU, she was appointed lead personal trainer at the WVU Recreation Center. She also held other coaching, trainer, and management positions in Morgantown in West Virginia’s most advanced fitness and athletic training facilities.
For years, Piendel has enjoyed all fitness avenues, especially Olympic weightlifting and powerlifting. Piendel competed with the WVU Powerlifting Team where her first-place finish in her age and weight division contributed to the team’s Co-ed National Championship in 2019.
Since then, she has gone from competing to training clients, helping them achieve their health goals at the YMCA. “Whether it’s group exercise, personal training, or fitness classes, I have taught, coached and programmed multiple health/fitness disciplines including weight loss, strength gain, mobility improvement, general health improvement, conditioning improvement, and athletic training,” she said. “It is rewarding to not only watch my clients quickly meet their goals, but I thoroughly enjoy assisting them to achieve what they never thought was possible.”
